Elder abuse is a serious and growing issue. The number of seniors over 65 is projected to more than double in Canada and Ontario by 2036. Studies have indicated that between 8% to 10% of older adults experience some form of abuse. Elder abuse is recurrent in up to 80% of cases, rather than being isolated incidents.

This abuse can take on different forms — including financial, psychological, physical, sexual, neglect, and institutional.

The Thunder Bay Police Service is committed to working with community partners and agencies to protect seniors. If you or someone you know believes they are a victim of elder abuse, please contact police and speak to our investigators.

More information about elder abuse and how it can be prevented can be found on the Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario website.
