Two people have been arrested after one was found in possession of a loaded handgun while being chased by officers, and the other nearly struck an officer with a vehicle while attempting to flee.
Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Primary Response Branch were dispatched to the 100 block of Banning Street just before 5 a.m. on Monday, November 18, after receiving reports of a disturbance.
Responding officers attended the location and spoke with individuals present. One individual pushed past an officer and ran down the street. The suspect was pursued by officers and attempted to draw a loaded handgun before eventually being arrested.
At the same time, another individual drove away in a vehicle, operating the vehicle in a dangerous manner and nearly striking an officer.
The suspect vehicle was located a short distance away, with the driver asleep behind the wheel. The suspect was not cooperative with officers but was eventually placed under arrest.
Same ALEMU, 27, of Toronto is charged with the following:
• Assault
• Resisting a Peace Officer
• Possession of a Schedule I for the Purpose of Trafficking x2
• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime under $5,000
• Carrying Concealed Prohibited Device of Firearm
• Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm
• Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
• Possession of Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
• Possession of Firearm Contrary to Prohibition Order
Tajahan KELLY, 29, of Bolton, is charged with the following:
• Possession of Schedule I Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking
• Obstruct Peace Officer
• Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
• Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
• Failure to Comply with Release Order
The accused appeared in court and have been remanded into custody with a future appearance date.
