Police arrested a Thunder Bay man who attacked paramedics and responding officers who were trying to provide him with medical assistance.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Primary Response Branch were dispatched to the area of Simpson and George Streets just before 9 p.m. on Sunday, July 30 following reports a patient was attacking paramedics who were attempting to provide medical assistance.

When officers arrived, they learned paramedics with the Superior North EMS were tending to a male when he began kicking near them and threatening to attack them.

The male then attacked one of the responding officers who was attempting to assist paramedics to provide medical assistance.

Moments later, the male attacked a paramedic, spitting in their face and eye. The male continued to be combative and damaged EMS equipment in the ambulance.

As a result, the male was arrested by police. The accused, who was still in need of medical attention, was transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further evaluation and treatment.

A 24-year-old Thunder Bay man now faces charges of:

• Mischief Under $5,000
• Assault Peace Officer x 2
• Failure to Comply with Undertaking

He has been released from custody with conditions and a future appearance date.

Charges against the accused have not been formally sworn before the courts, and as a result his identify is being withheld at this time.
