A city police officer jumped into a waterway to save a drowning man Monday afternoon.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers were dispatched to reports of a possible male drowning at the Kaministiquia River Heritage Park 4:45 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 30. Firefighters with the Thunder Bay Fire Rescue and Superior North EMS paramedics were also dispatched to the scene.

When the first officer arrived he located the male in the water. Due to the immediate threat to the male’s safety, the officer jumped into the river to prevent the drowning.

The male resisted the rescue efforts, but was eventually brought to a nearby ladder. He continued to resist the rescue efforts of the officer in the water and others who arrived on scene in the meantime.

Firefighters arrived on scene and assisted the officers with the rescue. He was eventually removed from the river without further incident.

Paramedics attended to the victim at the scene before transporting him to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for further treatment.
