Thunder Bay Police Service officers responded to reports of a shoplifting and assault incident at the Walmart on 777 Memorial Avenue just before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 28.

Responding officers learned a woman was leaving the store in an attempt to steal beer when a security guard intervened. The accused woman bit the security guard in the hand as he attempted to place her under arrest.

Police arrested the accused woman at the scene.

The accused claimed she was unable to speak or understand English. Officers exhausted multiple efforts to communicate with her through translators and even Google Translate.

The accused eventually spoke with officers in English, but provided a false name to investigators and made false allegations of a kidnapping incident.

Annika Rose GEORGE, 20, of Thunder Bay, is charged with Assault, Theft Under $5,000, Obstruct Peace Officer and Public Mischief – Providing False Statement.

GEORGE appeared in court Monday and was released with conditions and a future appearance date.
