The Thunder Bay Police Service is warning the public about a text and email scam currently circulating that appears to be targeting retail credit or debit cards.
In multiple reports of this scam, would-be victims receive unsolicited text messages about claims of a failed login attempt on the target’s Canadian Tire Mastercard. A web url bring the target to a website that looks nearly identical to Canadian Tire’s website.
On this website the user is urged to fill in private information, including their PIN, in an effort to protect themselves.
THIS IS A SCAM! Do not click unsolicited links and do not provide any private details. If you are concerned there may be an issue with your credit card, seek out contact information for the financial services company independently and contact them directly to discuss your possible issues.
While the TBPS has received reports about Canadian Tire Mastercards, it is possible that similar scams are currently circulating using other retailers and other financial service companies.
Never call 9-1-1 to report a suspected scam.
If you receive a call from a suspected scammer, but avoided being victimized, please do not call the non-emergency line. Unfortunately, the Thunder Bay Police Service is unable to stop these calls from being made.
