Police arrested a speeding driver with expired plates who attempted to provide a false identity before being found to be impaired Tuesday morning.

The incident took place before 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5. A Thunder Bay Police Service officer with the Traffic Unit noticed the driver speeding on Lanark Crescent. The officer stopped the motorist, who was driving a vehicle with licence plates that expired in 2004.

The Thunder Bay woman provided the officer with a name, but an investigation quickly determined it was a false identity. The woman was then positively identified by police.

The officer learned the woman was in possession of drug paraphernalia, and she admitted to using that morning. The officer noticed multiple other signs of impairment.

The driver then failed a Standardized Field Sobriety Test, and was arrested and transported to the Thunder Bay Police Service headquarters.

Further evaluation by a Drug Recognition Expert concluded the driver was impaired by drug.

The driver refused to provide police with a blood sample.

A 42-year-old Thunder Bay woman has been charged with Obstruct a Peace Officer, Failure or Refusal to Comply with Demand, and Operation While Impaired by Alcohol and Drugs.

The accused was released with conditions and a future appearance date.
