Thunder Bay Police officers attended reports of an unwanted person at the Victoria Inn at about 2:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29.
When officers arrived they informed the male, who did not have a room at the hotel, that he had to leave the premises.
The male refused and assaulted one of the responding officers, at which point the officers placed him under arrest. The male resisted, but after some struggle police were able to apprehend him.
Through the course of their investigation officers located several thousand pills, which are believed to be oxycodone. They also located about $1,000 in Canadian currency.
Police also located a loaded handgun that was in the male’s possession.
Philippe Martin MCLAUGHLIN, 23, of Ottawa has been charged with:
• Assault a Peace Officer
• Carrying Concealed Weapon
• Prohibited or Restricted Firearm: With Ammunition
• Careless Use: Firearm, Weapon, Restricted Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition
• Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
• Unauthorized Possession of Firearm – Licence
• Tamper With Serial Number of Firearm
• Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000
• Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Weapon
• Prohibited or Restricted Firearm: with ammunition
• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking
Additional charges are still being considered.
MCLAUGHLIN appeared in court Tuesday morning and was remanded into custody with a future date.
