Police charged a Thunder Bay woman with impaired operation of a motor vehicle after she was observed driving erratically with two child passengers Sunday morning.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Uniform Patrol Branch were in the area of Court Street North near River Street just after 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4 when they observed an SUV travelling northbound at a high rate of speed.

Officers observed the motorist stop at a red light, but when the light turned green and the intersection was safe to cross the motorist waited for an extended period of time. The driver then accelerated quickly, at which point officers conducted a traffic stop.

When officers approached the driver they noticed multiple signs of impairment. Police also observed an open bottle of liquor inside the vehicle.

Officers also noticed two small children in the vehicle without car seats or seatbelts.

The motorist failed a road-side breath test and was arrested by police. She was transported to the TBPS headquarters for further evaluation, which confirmed she was impaired by alcohol.

Further tests revealed her Blood Alcohol Concentration to be 309 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, which is nearly four times the legal limit.

A 33-year-old Thunder Bay woman is charged with Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired, and Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired Blood Alcohol Concentration.

She was released from custody with conditions and a future appearance date.
