Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Criminal Investigations Branch have made an arrest in connection with the homicide investigation of Amelia Corrie SAINNAWAP.

Officers with the Uniform Patrol Branch were originally dispatched shortly after midnight on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018, to a laneway in the 200 block of Simpson Street regarding a female who was on the ground and possibly unconscious.

The woman was discovered by a passerby who immediately contacted 911. Paramedics transported the woman to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre where she was pronounced dead before 1 a.m. that morning.

The woman was later identified as 31-year-old Amelia Corrie SAINNAWAP. An investigation revealed her injuries were consistent with an assault

Police set up and secured a crime scene immediately following the discovery of SAINNAWAP to allow officers to gather evidence and continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding her death. A heavy police presence remained in the neighbourhood during this time.

The scene was released by police on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2018.

Since then investigators with the service’s Criminal Investigation Branch and members of the Forensic Identification Unit have continued to collect and examine evidence connected to this homicide. As a result of those ongoing efforts police were able to identify a suspect.

On Tuesday, Sept. 24, just after 1 p.m. , a 42-year-old Thunder Bay man was arrested Thunder Bay Police Service officers and charged with Second-Degree Murder in a the homicide of Amelia SAINNAWAP.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, Sept. 25.

Police will share his identity with the public after the charges against him have been sworn in court.
