Police charged a local man involved in a single-vehicle collision Monday for impaired driving after he was found to have a blood alcohol concentration more than triple the legal limit.

Thunder Bay Police Service officers with the Uniform Patrol Branch were dispatched just after 5:45 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 14 to the corner of Farrand and Argyle Streets following reports of a motor-vehicle collision.

When officers arrived on the scene they observed the involved pickup truck matched the description of a vehicle previously reported as driving erratically. Concerned citizens called 911 about a suspected impaired driver travelling northbound on Fort William Road.

The truck was also observed striking a tree on Farrand Street.

When police approached the motorist they observed several signs of possible impairment. Several empty cans of beer were also observed in the truck’s cab.

The driver was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving. He was transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for medical assessment. He later provided the police with breath samples, which concluded his blood alcohol concentration was more than three times the legal limit.

A 25-year-old Thunder Bay man is charged with Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired by Alcohol, and Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired Blood Alcohol Concentration.

He was released with conditions and a future appearance date.
