A Grey Cup Championship ring stolen from former CFL defensive lineman Stephen Anderson in 2013 has been located and returned.
The ring was stolen, along with a number of other items, from the victim’s vehicle in Thunder Bay on Aug. 22, 2013. The Thunder Bay Police Service began an investigation of Theft Over $5,000.
In November of 2019 a detective constable with the York Regional Police Service contacted the Thunder Bay Police Service after receiving information that a metal melting company in Toronto had located a Grey Cup championship ring.
Staff of the metal melting company spotted the ring and became concerned as it appeared that a player was likely the rightful owner.
A detective constable with the Thunder Bay Police was able to confirm that it did match the description of Anderson’s stolen ring. The detective constable took possession of the ring and made arrangements to have it returned to Anderson.
The ring is now in Anderson’s possession, just in time for this weekend’s Grey Cup championship game between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
Anderson played a key role in the Calgary Stampeders 1998 Grey Cup win. With 2:02 remaining Anderson prevented a two-point conversion, which allowed the Stampeders to continue their rally and defeat the Hamilton Tiger-Cats 24-22.
