A driver involved in a fatal November 2023 motor vehicle collision faces new charges.
On November 30, 2023, shortly after 3:30 p.m., the Thunder Bay Police Service received reports of a collision on Oliver Road near Highgate Road.
A pickup truck and sedan were involved in a head-on collision, and both vehicles ended up in ditches on opposite sides of the road. Both vehicles sustained major damage, with the engine block from the sedan being expelled from the vehicle and coming to rest in the front yard of a nearby residence.
The lone occupant of the sedan and both occupants of the pickup truck were extricated from the vehicles. All three were taken to hospital for treatment of injuries considered serious to potentially life-threatening.
One of the occupants of the pickup truck later died as a result of those injuries. He has been identified as Russell WANZUK, 79.
Initial charges had been laid against the driver of the sedan in November 2023. The continued investigation by Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Unit officers led to enhanced charges.
Dallas HIEBERT, a 29-year-old of Thunder Bay, appeared in court on Tuesday, June 11, and is now charged with Impaired Operation Causing Death and Dangerous Operation Causing Death.
HIEBERT remains charged with Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm, Impaired Operation Causing Bodily Harm, and Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus).
