Police have laid charges related to a serious collision that happened on Oliver Road in November, resulting in three people being hospitalized.
On November 30, 2023, shortly after 3:30 p.m., the Thunder Bay Police Service received reports of a collision on Oliver Road near Highgate Road.
A pickup truck and sedan were involved in a head-on collision, and both vehicles ended up in ditches on opposite sides of the road. Both vehicles sustained major damage, with the engine block from the sedan being expelled from the vehicle and coming to rest in the front yard of a nearby residence.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue firefighters and Superior North EMS paramedics also responded.
The lone occupant of the sedan and both occupants of the pickup truck — the 79-year-old driver and 47-year-old passenger — were extricated from the vehicles. All three were taken to hospital for treatment of injuries considered serious to potentially life-threatening.
As a result of the continued investigation by Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Unit officers, charges were laid last week against the driver of the sedan.
Dallas HIEBERT, a 29-year-old of Thunder Bay, is charged with the following:
• Impaired Operation Causing Bodily Harm x2
• Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm x2
• Operation of a Motor Vehicle While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration (80 plus)
HIEBERT has been released from custody with a future court appearance date.
The two occupants of the pickup truck are still in hospital with serious, life-altering injuries and face a very long road to recovery. These two individuals are heavily involved in their communities, and the lives of them and their families will never be the same. This collision highlights the dangers posed by alcohol impairment and speed and should serve as a stark reminder of the severe consequences for those who choose to drive impaired.
