Area police services joined forces Thursday afternoon to officially launch the 2018 Festive RIDE season.

A ceremonial kickoff event took place in front of the Mac’s Convenience store on Arthur and Franklin Streets. Police services taking part in the Festive RIDE program include the Anishinabek Police Service, CP Police, CN Police, Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service, Ontario Provincial Police and the Thunder Bay Police Service.

RIDE is an acronym for Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere and is a national campaign aimed at reducing incidents of impaired driving through increased awareness and enforcement.

During the Festive RIDE season, police agencies will more actively conduct RIDE programs in response to the traditional increased rates of impaired driving throughout the holidays.

“Impaired driving continues to be one of the leading causes of death in motor vehicle collisions,” said Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Unit Sgt. Gord Snyder. “Every one of these collisions is completely preventable. Simply put, if you plan on drinking or using drugs then do not drive.”

The TBPS will continue to track Festive RIDE statistics and provide weekly updates at: www.thunderbaypolice.ca/festiveride
