Special Constable: Thunder Bay Courthouse


Reporting to the Special Constable Supervisor, A Special Constable is responsible for the transportation, security, control, and care of persons in custody in accordance with Thunder Bay Police Service policies and procedures.


  • Transports prisoners to and from the Thunder Bay Courthouse, from other institutions, and escorts prisoners within the confines of the courthouse to courtrooms, lawyers’ interviews, etc. at required times.
  • Receives prisoners brought to the holding area, conducts searches, controls the receipt and return of all property, and secures persons in holding/individual cells.
  • Searches security area at beginning and end of day.
  • Escorts prisoners into courtroom, controls access of prisoners to unauthorized persons or articles, takes into custody and searches persons sentenced or having outstanding warrants, and prepares arrest reports and makes arrests as required.
  • Notifies the Special Constable Supervisor and/or Court Sergeant of unusual activity and security risks/problems.
  • Escorts released persons to designated areas.
  • Provides meals to prisoners.
  • Executes D.N.A.orders
  • Performs other duties as assigned including those listed in the Thunder Bay Police Service – Consolidated Courthouse Policy and Court Security Plan and the TBPS TBC Fire Evacuation Plan.


  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with the public and persons-in-custody in a professional, courteous, and tactful manner and with individuals who may be verbally abusive. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills. 
  • Observation and organizational skills with the ability to meet priorities and timelines. 
  • Must successfully complete a local interview along with psychological and medical testing. 
  • Must have successfully passed the Ontario Police Fitness PIN Award program within the last six (6) months or be able to pass it upon advancing to the interview stage .
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license permitting full driving privileges in Ontario and no more than 6 demerit points.
  • Must possess a valid First Aid/CPR certificate.
  • Must be able to meet the requirements under and be approved by the Ministry of Solicitor General for Use of Force, Police Powers, Provincial Legislation, and Federal Legislation.
  • Must possess an Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Certificate of Results.


  • Must take Oath of Secrecy and undergo Security Clearance
  • Must work and attend meetings/events outside of regular working hours
  • May be required to travel from time to time and provide own transportation
