Special Constable - Jailer

Thunder Bay Police Service is a mid-sized Ontario service located in Northwestern Ontario serving the communities of Thunder Bay and Oliver Paipoonge with approximately 330 Sworn and Civilian members. 

We require eager professionals with a passion for law enforcement for the position of Special Constable - Jailer.   

Special Constables are civilian employees who are appointed by the Police Services Board and conferred law enforcement powers by the Service.

Salary ranges for the position are $63,968.84 - $76,113.33 annually, as well as OMERS pension and expansive benefits package.


  • Ensure the safety and security of persons in custody at the police station through periodic inspections and by electronic monitoring as set out in Policies and Procedures;
  • Ensure youth are assigned to cells separated by sight from all adult prisoners and youth of the opposite gender;
  • Responsible for returning the property to persons in custody;
  • Responsible for legible and accurate entries on all documents (Release documents, Information, Remand Warrants, CPIC checks, C.R. breakdowns, etc.)  processed within the unit;
  • Supply meals to prisoners as required;
  • Under the direction of the Watch Commander, is responsible for administering medication to persons in custody as required;
  • Communicate effectively with police officers, lawyers, family members and other persons having an interest in incarcerated persons;
  • With the assistance of Officers, conduct Video Remand sessions;
  • Perform finger printing and photographing duties of prisoners;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must possess good moral character and habit;
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and with individuals who may be verbally abusive;
  • Must successfully complete physical, psychological and medical testing; 
  • Must possess a valid certificate of results from Applicant Testing Services (ATS): https://www.applicanttesting.com/career-paths/special-constable/testing-information.html;
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license permitting full driving privileges in Ontario and no more than 6 demerit points;
  • Must possess a valid First Aid/CPR certificate. Must meet the requirements under and be approved by the Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services i.e. Use of Force, Police Powers, Provincial Legislation, and Federal Legislation.


Must undergo a successful police records check – type 2 and sign and abide by an Employee Confidentiality statement.
