Information Technology Systems Administrator

Thunder Bay Police Service is a mid-sized Ontario service located in Northwestern Ontario serving the communities of Thunder Bay and Oliver Paipoonge with approximately 330 Sworn and Civilian members. 

We require an eager, experienced I.T. professional, preferably with a passion for security, for the position of Information Technology Systems Administrator

The successful candidate will be joining a dynamic, exciting I.T. unit, focused on work/life balance, recognizing efficiencies and inclusive participation of all members.

Salary ranges for the position are $66,996.46 - $82,455.47, as well as OMERS pension and expansive benefits package.

Under the general supervision of the I.T. Unit Supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible will for maintaining the network infrastructure, security and the functionality of Thunder Bay Police Service’s information systems hardware as well as providing technical security advice ensuring 24/7 business continuity, corporate data protection and the delivery of efficient ticket resolution for employees.

Major tasks:

1.      Designs, implements, and maintains network access infrastructure devices and services including, but not limited to, VPN, Firewall, Internet Security, Wireless, Authentication, Intrusion Prevention/Detection and Antivirus; designs, implements, and maintains all aspects of network infrastructure security; performs network security risk assessment, defend systems against unauthorized access, modification and/or destruction.

2.      Performs or assists with all aspects of network functionality, including but not limited to, routing, routing protocols, VLANs, Sub-netting, switching, DHCP, DNS.

3.      Performs or assists with the configuration of servers, Windows Server Operating Systems, Active Directory and Group Policy configuration and deployment as well as creation of virtual machines using Scale Computing KVMs.

4.      Performs or assists with the installation, setup, implementation, testing, support, maintenance and troubleshooting of network hardware, network security devices, desktop workstations, laptops, and mobility devices.

5.      Provides software application support and hardware diagnostic support to users.

6.      Train TBPS personnel in the use of hardware, security awareness and procedures, and the use of software applications when required.

7.      Assists in developing in-house policy & procedures that relate to networks, network security, corporate data safeguards and computer applications.

8.      Performs or assists with the installation, implementation, testing, support, maintenance and troubleshooting of information technology systems including the Records Management System, Computer Aided Dispatch, external system interfaces and common application packages.



  • Cisco network & firewall certification & experience with configuration & deployment of VPN & Firewalls, intrusion detection, network analysis & experience with KVM hypervisor are definite assets. 
  • Three years’ post-secondary education majoring in computer studies with a minimum of three years’ experience or an equivalent combination of education & experience in computer technology specifically in the security, hardware & networking areas.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Server and PC Operating Systems required.
